TECHNOLOGIES: ADJUSTABLE HEAD ANGLE With the new Scale RC, you can adjust the head angle by 0.6 degrees slacker or steeper. This can be done without cutting cables or bleeding brakes. All you must do is disassemble the bar, rotate the headset cups 180 degrees, and reassemble. SYNCROS FRASER IC COMBO The New Scale features the Fraser iC combo from Syncros. Integrating the cables presents a number of unique problems and the Fraser was designed in part to address this. Syncros’s designers worked on the shape to allow the cables to flow under the bar and around the sides of the stem before disappearing into the headset with integrated plastic parts to keep it clean and efficient. This avoids bends or kinks in the cables and provides a minimalist front end. All our bars and stems feature multiple options for computer, light, and camera mounts both on top or under the bar. DESIGN The new Scale’s design was uncompromisingly subjected to our pursuit of perfection and drive for pure efficiency, strictly following the guiding principle of "Form follows Function". In our search for the ultimate, yet most simple construction, we’ve centered the design around the essentials by balancing the bike’s DNA in order to create a whole new breed of XC bike. The result is a straightforward and clear design, which provides the all-new Scale with its distinctive character and aggressive look: a bike that proudly shows off its characteristics. HOLLOW DROPOUT CONSTRUCTION The dropout features an advanced, hollow construction, which allows the axle head to clamp against the inner surface of the dropout and leaves the head flush with the surface. This enables the lightest possible construction approach and a clean-looking design from the outside. While being able to directly shave off 7.5g with the new dropout construction, the optimized design favors a narrower construction of the rear triangle area, which in turn enables a reduction of 20g in this area of the frame (HMX-SL). POLYMER INSERTS With the all-new Scale RC, we constantly reduced the amount of metal inserts wherever possible. Instead, lighter polymer versions were incorporated and can be found as the bottle cage inserts on the HMX-SL frames. These can be plugged completely, sitting flush on the frame due to a smart and flexible clipping mechanism. Being able to set up the plugs and mounts needed provides riders with maximum flexibility and further eliminates potential vulnerable points as these are easily replaceable in the event of a damaged thread. Plugs and inserts are easy to set up without the need for additional tools and further contribute to the overall clean design. MONOCOQUE CONSTRUCTION The new Scale RC’s monocoque construction enables production using only one mold for the main section of the bike, the front triangle. Applying our carbon expertise, the new Scale, therefore, consists of only 3 separate pieces molded together. This directly translates into an increased level of efficiency due to the reduced number of junctions required therefore decreasing weight while keeping superior stiffness – something we’re always aiming for with hardtail race bikes. With the full frame constructed as a system, the monocoque design enables the frame to handle forces as a whole. SERVICE DOOR A little service door, which is accessible through a downtube cover, allows easy access to the interior of the frame without the need to remove the Bottom Bracket. Frame maintenance is made easy with regards to cable routing.

It looks straightforward but that belies the high-tech features and design hidden within. This is a modern take on the simple machine that many still choose to put battery acid in their thighs and fire in their lungs in order to conquer something. Hard on the throttle, soft on the body Hardtails are about as subtle as bikes come, and in the case of the Highball, simplistic refinement belies engineering effort. We’ve learned from our road biking pals that a great deal of a hardtail’s compliance comes from the seatpost: the smaller the diameter, the softer the feel, and with more seat post exposed to daylight, more compliance is had— which is the reason the Highball features low slung top tube and the smaller, 27.2mm diameter post. But you need not be sitting to recognize the ‘soft’ feel of the Highball— the dropped seat stays are made of custom laminate, finely tuned here in Santa Cruz for vertical compliance— and they’re oriented to isolate the top tube from high speed trail chatter, reducing feedback to the, uh, engine.
